About us

Tango was born on the banks of the Rio de la Plata, and is the result of the mixing of the traditions of significant waves of immigration with local musical roots. It is a musical genre with a binary rhythm (2 x 4), and is danced in couples. The man guides the woman in an embrace (el abrazo) without a pre-defined coreography, which makes Tango an expression of a unique moment in time. As with its orchestration and its lyrics, a major characteristic of the dance is an expression of sensuality and nostalgia; expressing emotions and feelings. There are precise Tanguero "codes" known by all aficionados, not only in the dance itself, as well as in costume and idiom or dialect (Lunfardo), but also in the handling of the body (Compadre).

In 2009, Tango was declared a World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, which demonstrates its universal dimensions. One of the best definitions of Tango comes from Enrique Santos Discepolo, who said, "Tango is a sad thought, danced."

Milonga precedes Tango, and its rhythm is faster: 4 x 4. It is said that milonga has roots in African music (notably Candombe and Cayengue), which give it a "Chaloupe" cadence, within which one can insert steps on off-beats (el traspié). There are numerous sub-genres of Milonga, such as "Milonga lisa", "Milonga traspié", "Milonga ciudadana", and "Milonga campera". Unlike Tango, its character is more effervescent, playful and fast.

Tango milonguero is a style of Tango that is danced "Apilado", where the dancers embrace forming a pyramid. The "Abrazo" (the embrace), is closed on the top part of the bodies, this gives the dancers a greater fluidity of foot movement which provides a better connection and ease between the dancers. The man leads with a slight pressure on his left arm over the woman's right hand, who drapes her partner with her left arm, maintaining the axes and the posture. This rhythm has a stronger beat, positioning itself between Tango and Milonga.
